Mini Dental Implants - NC
Mini Implants work very similarly to regular dental implants, however usually mini implants can be used quicker and can be installed with a less invasive fitting method. Mini implants can also be placed directly into the jawbone without having to create an incision into the gums, as is necessary with traditional implants. Mini implants are also preferred over traditional implants when the patient’s jawbone has less viable bone structure due to deterioration or tooth decay.
The mini implants themselves are roughly the size of a standard wooden toothpick, which is approximately half the size of a standard dental implant. Because of their smaller size, mini implants often heal quicker and with fewer complications than standard dental implants.
Mini implants are typically used in certain cases where standard dental implants are not viable. Because they are smaller and more difficult to install and alter, mini implants require an extremely skilled and experienced dentist, which is exactly what we offer at Macdonald & Whaley, DDS. The MDI System consists of a miniature titanium implant that acts like the root of your tooth and a retaining fixture that is incorporated into the base of your denture, The head of the implant is shaped like a ball and the retaining fixture acts like a socket that contains a rubber O-ring.
The O-ring snaps over the ball when the denture is seated and holds the denture at a predetermined level of force. When seated, the denture gently rests on the gum tissue. The implant fixtures allow for micro-mobility while withstanding natural lifting forces.
